Daryl was dealt a losing hand at birth. His mother was an alcoholic who died smoking in bed and burned the house down around her when he was just a child. His father was a violent drunk and Daryl is covered in horrible scars from the physical abuse he was subjected to for years. Beaten, tortured, and neglected, he was lost in the woods for over a week when he was nine and had to learn to survive all on his own. To Daryl, family had always meant pain. He has an instinct to protect children and the innocent because he was never protected himself.MERLE'S INFLUENCE
His brother, nearly a decade older than him, was no better to him. Merle left home at seventeen and left Daryl behind with the father he knew couldnโt be trusted. When Daryl grew up and finally started following his brother around after Merle got out of prison, his older brother was nothing but a crass, violent influence on him. For years, Daryl thought he was only worth being belittled and taken for granted. It took losing track of Merle during the apocalypse and finding his feet with another found family for Daryl to finally grow beyond him.MEETING RICK'S GROUP
Daryl would not be the person heโs become without having Rick to follow and Carol to believe in him. Being needed and respected and liked by Rick and his people, having a positive role model and people to love him were things Daryl had never experienced before and the changes began immediately after the disappearance of his brother โ he became a protector and self-sacrificer, an honourable man in a world of broken people. Thanks to them, Daryl finally learned how to belong.GLENN'S DEATH
The same way Rick and his people had opened Daryl up to the world of human connection, Glenn's horrific murder closed him off to it. He still blames himself and continues to take on more than his share of responsibility and guilt in his everyday life, a pattern heโs never shaken. He has seen the very worst humanity has to offer, suffered the worst losses, and is distrustful because of it. Despite all the good he's done, Daryl feels like he'll always be on the hook for his mistakes.RICK'S DISAPPEARANCE
Another thing Daryl blames himself for is Rickโs disappearance and the fact that he was never able to find and bring his body home. He'll never forgive himself for doing his part to get Rick on that bridge and Daryl carries Rickโs leadership and brotherhood with him every day and holds his place in the world by remembering what he would do and enacting it. Daryl might not be a natural leader but Rick was, and so Daryl has learned to pick up the mantle and lead in his place. Itโs the least he can do for the man who gave Daryl a real life at the end of the world.
A Chupacabra-influenced classic werewolf, Daryl experiences a nasty yet slow transformation that increases his size, strength, and endurance and heightens all of his senses to supernatural levels of acuteness. Like the American iteration of the Chupacabra, his pelt is thin and mangey-looking and he develops a crested spine, claws, and horrible razor-sharp fangs used for draining blood. His snout lengths, he grows a lashing tail, and his shoulders hunch in a grotesque, hulking way. In full transformation, his cock also develops the classic werewolf knot.
INVULNERABILITY | His tough skin and fur eventually render him nearly invulnerable to ordinary weapons, even bullets and blades, but Daryl will rarely be able to resist his primal canine urges of sex and violence long enough to reach his most dangerous state of transformation.
HYPNOTIC BITE | No matter his stage of transformation, Daryl's bite has quasi-hypnotic effects on his victims โ they feel bonded to him in return (to varying opt-in degrees, of course) and want to be near him and/or submit to him the way a pack member would its leader.
SUPERNATURALLY HEIGHTENED SENSES | Daryl can hear and understand the changes in someone's heartbeat, smell their emotional state, taste the recent history of objects (or people), see extremely well in the dark and feel the vibrations of prey miles away.
Darylโs monster is born both from his deep connection to the wilderness and his inherited anger and pain that he tries to keep buried. His wolf-beast is a manifestation of both these aspects. His instincts are just as geared towards building a pack and protecting his territory as they are roaming and hunting. While in the middle heights of his transformation, heโs obsessed with marking and claiming those heโs managed to bond to. Heโs easily driven crazy by pheromones and in this form will heavily affect anyone else sensitive to them as well. In his early stages, just placate him with a snack or a scratch or a cuddle. Then run.

Age:Late 40sEarly 50s (canon never specifies)
Appearance: s9 gifset linked above
Canon Point: 10.16 - "A Certain Doom"
(updated to 11.08 - "For Blood")
Background: Daryl Dixon @ the Walking Dead Wiki
CRAU: n/a
Personality:
Before anything else, Daryl has always been a survivor. Being capable and practical were all that saved him when his life-or-death tests began long before the end of the world. Daryl was forced to take on a brutally individualistic mindset (hunting for his own food and feeding himself without funds, finding his own way home at 9 years old after being lost for days) when his mother died horribly and his older brother left him with an abusive drunk of a father when he was very young. This has primed him to survive whenever his world only gets harsher and although Daryl isn't exactly adaptable (he struggles to find any place at all in civilized society), he's made to thrive in rugged and dangerous conditions. He can hunt, trap, track, and survive on very little without feeling sorry for himself. He was raised to be tough, and that survival instinct and defensive mechanism, forged in a childhood full of severe abuse and neglect, has galvanized into something unshakeable in Daryl. He has extremely high endurance and tolerance for pain, but his toughness extends to something more than physical - he absolutely will not cave or break, even when tortured (both mentally and physically) by the likes of Negan. His determination is frightening, and once he's set his mind to something, like finding Carol's daughter, Daryl would rather kill himself in the process of completing the goal than give up. He is also far cleverer than his first impression would suggest. He is intuitive and strategic, he reads a room well and he tends to be a very good judge of a personโs soul. He isn't an indiscriminate killer and has proven, both with Dwight and Negan, that he's capable of huge acts of forgiveness if someone has proved themselves to be a changed person. It's something he himself deeply understands.
Daryl was an uncontrolled, volatile and impulsive redneck handful before getting the chance to bond with Rick and his group, and the changes (for the better) in Daryl began immediately. He still retains a lot of that same volatile nature (usually lashing out because of fear or insecurity, or because someone he loves has been hurt) but it is tempered with an impossibly intense and simple loyalty for those he deems to be a part of his group. He will gladly kill and die for anyone he deems worth protecting, no matter how new to his group they are, revealing his innate status of being a protector to a community. He is not, however, protective in a possessive way; Daryl doesn't believe himself worthy of the relationships he's forged, and would never presume to argue that anyone owes him any kind of friendship or respect for what he's done. In an effort to feel needed and as though he has a purpose and a place to belong, Daryl has developed a complex for protecting others, violently if need be. He is completely uninterested in being seen as the hero, though Daryl nevertheless takes on these responsibilities very quickly. He instinctively looks out for others, especially those smaller, gentler, or more innocent than himself; Carol (at first), Judith, Beth, and eventually larger and larger communities. He risks himself for those he sees as having value because he himself, he thinks, isnโt worth very much. Heโs already tailor-made to navigate brutal or violent surroundings, so the weight of responsibility on Daryl often feels overwhelming. Because of this, he takes losses very hard and sees them as a personal failing on his part.
Honest to the point of being nearly incapable of lying to those that matter to him (he'd rather just say nothing), Daryl still has a great deal of lingering self-doubt when it comes to trusting his own leadership instincts. After a lifetime of following his older brother and bad-influence, Merle (and later Rick), Daryl is adept at supporting a strong personality and will usually pick the person he trusts the most to throw his own voice behind so the difficult decisions wonโt fall to him. He feels safest in this position of 'right-hand man' and is willing to do whatever dirty work is delegated to him in order to make the job of the leader easier, though if no capable leader steps up, Daryl will do whatever the job requires. This means his loyalty comes with occasional hiccups and disagreements, as Darylโs own particular 'fair play' moral code sometimes gets in the way of what others want him to do. Once Daryl has planted his feet on an issue it takes a great deal to move him.
The moral code he lives by is: don't hurt those that don't deserve it. Don't use the power you have in this world to hurt those that don't have it. Daryl has been severely damaged by a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse thanks to his parents and his brother and he is extremely closed-off because of it. He used to have a hard time acknowledging it and part of him still believes that he brought it on himself for being emotional and compassionate, which he was taught were weak traits for a man to display - even his hallucinations of his older brother berated and feminized him for the role he first took within Rick's group. He still struggles to fully participate in positive relationships and is occasionally still prone to attacking those who try to show him kindness. His way of resolving the fact that he doesn't know how to handle his own emotions is to lash out or disappear once they become overwhelming, though he has moved mountains in overcoming the worst of these defensive behaviors. He is still impulsive and distrustful, especially of authority figures, while also subconsciously longing for someone to take care of him; whether that means telling him what the right decision is or letting him know his feelings are legitimate and valid. He is self-hating, often angry, and he has a good deal of difficulty accepting help. He struggles with a lot of learned, toxic behavior that works directly against his naturally gentle and protective side, so he ends up rather unpredictably bouncing between the two states (screaming in Tara's face and berating her for screwing up the plan, but stopping short when he realizes he's upsetting Judith, a toddler). He's willing to play the 'tough guy' because he believes that's what others look to him for and that it's what he does best, although the more he hurts others the worse he looks at himself in the long run.
For all these reasons, Daryl had never had any positive, functioning relationships before meeting Rickโs group of survivors and he still doesn't know how to maintain enriching, emotional human connections without a good deal of help - his personal relationships have all been maintained by those that love him despite his flaws and make the efforts for him. His incredible compassion for those he has come to care about is always fighting against his learned instinct to avoid appearing vulnerable, and he tries not to speak more than he has to (unless heโs flying off the handle, and then all bets are off). Daryl feels his emotions like runaway freight trains and even though heโs always trying to control them the way he thinks men are supposed to, his outbursts of anger and sadness are overwhelming. As a result, the gentlest parts of him are distant, almost inaccessibly buried under an intimidating, hardened exterior. It takes a very long time to get to know him.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Not too many as of his canon point, but he can be self-pitying/self-hating, is prone to isolating himself instead of feeling overwhelming emotions and he compulsively needs to feel important/needed/valued by the people he cares about (a bit of a savior complex). He will risk his own safety at the drop of a hat for others.
Sins:
Murder ; Daryl has killed dozens and dozens of people during the apocalypse to keep his people safe, though some cases are certainly more dubious than others
Envy ; he grew up poor and abused and often psychologically takes that out on others or punishes himself because of it
Wrath ; assault after assault after losing his temper after oh look, another assault
Hedonism ; all the drinking and drugs, but surprisingly no sex
Powers/Abilities: n/a
Items: Crossbow, hunting knife

He is intuitive and strategic, he reads a room well and he tends to be a very good judge of a personโs soul, although he's still struggling with the question of whether to let Dwight - a man who he'd once tried to help and who went back to Negan's gang and killed a friend of his - live after he's exhausted his usefulness. In the end, Daryl will not be able to go through with killing him because he knows he doesn't deserve it and has atoned for his actions.
Daryl was an uncontrolled, volatile and impulsive redneck handful before getting the chance to bond with Rick and his group, and the changes (for the better) in Daryl began immediately. Because of this, he takes losses very hard and sees them as a personal failing on his part.
Honest to the point of being nearly incapable of lying to those that matter to him (he'd rather just say nothing), Daryl still has too much lingering self-doubt to trust his own capable instincts enough to be a leader. After a lifetime of following his older brother and bad-influence, Merle (and later Rick), Daryl is adept at supporting a strong personality and will pick the person he trusts the most to throw his own voice behind so the difficult decisions wonโt fall to him. He feels safest in this position of 'right-hand man' and is willing to do whatever dirty work is delegated to him in order to make the job of the leader easier. Still, this does not mean his loyalty comes without occasional hiccups and disagreements, as Darylโs own particular 'fair play' moral code sometimes gets in the way. He felt it was wrong to trade Michonne to the Governor for a better chance for themselves and told Rick so, although they have not yet escalated to outright and permanent disagreement in the war against Negan, where Daryl will fall non-negotiably on the harsher side.
That moral code is: don't hurt those that don't deserve it. Don't use the power you have in this world to hurt those that don't have it. Daryl has been severely damaged by a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse thanks to his parents and his brother, and he is extremely closed-off because of it. He used to have a hard time acknowledging it and part of him still believes that he brought it on himself for being emotional and compassionate, which he was taught were weak traits for a man to have - even his hallucinations of his older brother berated and feminized him for the role he took within Rick's group. He struggles to participate in positive relationships and is occasionally still prone to attacking those who try to show him kindness. His way of resolving the fact that he doesn't know how to handle his own emotions is to lash out once they become overwhelming, either verbally or violently, especially when he feels threatened or attacked. He is impulsive and distrustful, especially of authority, while subconsciously longing for someone to take care of him, whether that means telling him what the right decision is or letting him know his feelings are legitimate and valid. He is self-hating, often angry, and he has a good deal of difficulty accepting help. For all these reasons, Daryl has never had any positive, functioning relationships before meeting Rickโs group of survivors, and doesnโt yet know how to maintain enriching and emotional human connections properly - his personal relationships have all been maintained by those that love him despite his flaws. His incredible compassion for those he has come to care about is always fighting against his learned instinct to avoid appearing vulnerable, and he tries not to speak more than he has to (unless heโs flying off the handle, and then all bets are off). ![]() โ OOC โ BACKTAGGING: Absolutely โ FOURTHWALLING: No โ ACTION V. PROSE: Action, but will match style โ CONTACT: EST; โ Permissions โ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Yes, although Daryl will accept the very basics of comforting human touch only after a warming period. He both longs for and is resistant to the idea of anything more than a hug or a quick chaste kiss. He believes himself undeserving of love, and needs to be shown that gentleness and physical vulnerability do not necessarily translate to weakness, degradation, and humiliation like he was taught. โ ROMANCE & RELATIONSHIPS: Yes, although Daryl is looking for a family to finally grow up in far more than he is looking for a partner. If Daryl enters into a relationship it will be with someone who has earned his trust slowly, through actions instead of words, and who needs him as an emotional tether just as much as he needs them in return. But prepare for a long, rocky, uphill road. โ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yes, Daryl is an old hand at both doling out and receiving extreme acts of violence. He is just as quick to start fights as he is to put himself in the middle of them to break them up. He takes on the role of the torturer to extort information from a prisoner in his canon, and he's killed far more than a handful of people in his role as soldier and protector. โ PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE: Yes, although Daryl is very affected by it given his history and may lash out in response. However, he is virtually incapable of hurting others in the same way in return. He has also been subjected to physical and psychological torture techniques in his canon. โ WARNINGS: There is a great deal of explicit violence in Daryl's canon as well as problematic beliefs and behaviour, so I will give warnings as issues arise. I love playing through serious, violent, dark or boundary-pushing storylines, so, by all means, let me know if you prefer to opt-out of some concepts/opt out of writing with Daryl. His canon involves: hunting/animal death, emotional abuse, self-hate, repressed sexuality, drug use, racism & racist language, violence & gore, extreme child abuse & neglect, torture, death & murder. โ Shipping โ M/M: Yes, although Daryl is very closed off, reticent, and damaged by his upbringing. โ M/F: Yes, although Daryl is very closed off, reticent, and it would take a long time to develop. (Ex.: how he was with Leah, thanks timecards.) I personally see the Bethyl ship as a great older/younger sibling connection, not a ship. โ SMUT & KINKS: Yes, but only if a lot of build-up has happened. I play Daryl as pretty inexperienced and uninterested and new pairings will have to be played by ear. |
