STATISTICS

Character Name: Daryl Dixon
Character Canon: The Walking Dead
Character Age: Early 50s
Canon Point: End of 11.24: Rest in Peace
Link to History: Link
Skills:
  • HUNTER/TRACKER: His first and best skillset, Daryl has supported first himself, then small groups, and then entire communities with his talents as a hunter and a tracker. He learned to hunt to feed himself when he was young and the skill has never stopped being a staple in his life.
  • SURVIVALIST: Daryl has survived over a decade of the zombie apocalypse - he is adept at working with the bare minimum, enduring the elements, scavenging, and for part of his canon lives on his own in the wild for nearly 6 years with few conventional supplies.
  • ARCHER/WEAPONS MASTER: Skilled with a crossbow, all models of guns and rifles (including rocket launchers, yes that's canon), all manner of knives, hatchets and axes, a morning star (canon again), spears, and more.
  • MECHANIC: He can make almost anything run again with the right parts and he's built more than one bike for himself from scratch. Taught himself how to modify vehicles to run on corn fuel when gas ran out.
  • TORTURER: He knows how to cause a lot of pain while asking the right questions and doesn't shy from the job when he has the motivation to succeed.
  • JUDGE OF CHARACTER: Chosen by the leadership at Alexandria as their recruiter, multiple characters mention that they trust Daryl's judgement about people more than anyone else's. It's very hard for people to get one over on him.

    CHARACTERIZATION

    FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES:
    • TERRIBLE CHILDHOOD: Daryl was dealt a losing hand at birth. His mother was an alcoholic who died smoking in bed and burned the house down around her when he was just a child. His father was a violent drunk and Daryl is covered in horrible scars from the physical abuse he was subjected to for years. Beaten, tortured, and neglected, he was lost in the woods for over a week when he was nine and had to learn to survive all on his own. To Daryl, family had always meant pain. He has an instinct to protect children and the innocent because he was never protected himself.

    • HIS BROTHER MERLE: His brother, nearly a decade older than him, was no better to him. Merle left home at seventeen and left Daryl behind with the father he knew couldn’t be trusted. When Daryl grew up and finally started following his brother around after Merle got out of prison, his older brother was nothing but a crass, violent influence on him. For years, Daryl thought he was only worth being belittled and taken for granted. It took losing track of Merle during the apocalypse and finding his feet with another found family for Daryl to finally grow beyond him.

    • MEETING RICK'S GROUP: Daryl would not be the person he’s become without having Rick to follow and Carol to believe in him. Being needed and respected and liked by Rick and his people, having a positive role model and people to love him were things Daryl had never experienced before and the changes began immediately after the disappearance of his brother – he became a protector and self-sacrificer, an honourable man in a world of broken people. Thanks to them, Daryl finally learned how to belong.

    • GLENN'S DEATH: The same way Rick and his people had opened Daryl up to the world of human connection, Glenn's horrific murder closed him off to it. He still blames himself and continues to take on more than his share of responsibility and guilt in his everyday life, a pattern he’s never shaken. He has seen the very worst humanity has to offer, suffered the worst losses, and is distrustful because of it. Despite all the good he's done, Daryl feels like he'll always be on the hook for his mistakes.

    • RICK'S DISAPPEARANCE: Another thing Daryl blames himself for is Rick’s disappearance and the fact that he was never able to find and bring his body home. He'll never forgive himself for doing his part to get Rick on that bridge and Daryl carries Rick’s leadership and brotherhood with him every day and holds his place in the world by remembering what he would do and enacting it. Daryl might not be a natural leader but Rick was, and so Daryl has learned to pick up the mantle and lead in his place. It’s the least he can do for the man who gave Daryl a real life at the end of the world.

PHILOSOPHY: Daryl comes from a bleak world. He is an innate protector and will gladly kill and die for anyone he deems worthy. He is not, however, protective in a possessive way; Daryl doesn't believe himself worthy of the relationships he's forged, and would never presume to argue that anyone owes him any kind of friendship or respect for what he's done. In an effort to feel needed and as though he has a purpose and a place to belong, Daryl has developed a complex for protecting others, violently if need be. He is completely uninterested in being seen as the hero, though Daryl nevertheless takes on these responsibilities very quickly. He instinctively looks out for others, especially those smaller, gentler, or more innocent than himself. He risks himself for those he sees as having value because he himself, he thinks, isn’t worth very much. He’s already tailor-made to navigate brutal or violent surroundings, so the weight of responsibility on Daryl often feels overwhelming. Because of this, he takes losses very hard and sees them as a personal failure on his part.

DESIRES: Short-term, Daryl always strives to be prepared, independent, and to create a place of safety for himself and others. He needs a task to achieve or he feels utterly lost. He refuses to rely on other people unless he has no other choice, but that comes from a wounded place beginning in childhood. Long-term, Daryl just wants to feel like he belongs somewhere. He has been severely damaged by a lifetime of physical and emotional abuse thanks to his parents and his brother and he is extremely closed off because of it. He used to have a hard time acknowledging it and part of him still believes that he brought it on himself for being emotional and compassionate, which he was taught were weak traits for a man to have. He still struggles to fully participate in positive relationships and is occasionally still prone to retreating and isolating himself, or worse, attacking those who try to show him kindness. He finds it very hard to be kind to himself. More than anything, Daryl longs to be understood.

FEARS: More than anything, Daryl fears letting down the people he cares about. He's done it so, so many times before (he believes) and he feels every loss keenly. He's only just found out that Rick may be alive and Daryl is afraid that he's out there somewhere, waiting to be found, and his children are counting on Daryl to come through for them and bring their father home again. Daryl doesn't fear death or pain but he fears not being strong enough to protect the ones he loves because deep down he's afraid that that's all he is worth - and if he can't die for someone who deserves to live more than him, then what is he worth? Nothing at all.
    GAMEPLAY

SUITABILITY: Daryl has done so much to overcome his baser instincts, impulsivity and violent tendencies and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to challenge his growth with supernaturally influenced backslides into his more feral nature. It will be interesting to see how his urge to protect/defend others with violence (and build his pack) manifests both within the horror game elements and when in his monster form - there must be downsides to this nature, like jealousy and wrath. He is also extremely sexually repressed, self-conscious and self-hating, and as such requires exactly the type of external influence that horror/sex events and partial transformations provide to come out of his shell.

    SAMPLE: TDM TL

MONSTER: Daryl’s monster is born both from his deep connection to the wilderness and his inherited anger and pain that he tries to keep buried. His wolf-beast is a manifestation of both these aspects.

A Chupacabra-influenced classic werewolf, Daryl experiences a nasty yet slow transformation that increases his size, strength, and endurance and heightens all of his senses to supernatural levels of acuteness. Like the American iteration of the Chupacabra, his pelt is thin and mangey-looking and he develops a crested spine, claws, and horrible razor-sharp fangs used for draining blood. His snout lengths, he grows a lashing tail, and his shoulders hunch in a grotesque, hulking way. In full transformation, his cock also develops the classic werewolf knot. His tough skin and fur eventually render him nearly invulnerable to ordinary weapons, even bullets and blades, but Daryl will rarely be able to resist his primal canine urges of sex and violence long enough to reach his most dangerous state of transformation. His instincts are just as geared towards building a pack and protecting his territory as they are roaming and hunting. While in the middle heights of his transformation, he’s obsessed with marking and claiming those he’s managed to bond to and his bite, no matter his stage of transformation has quasi-hypnotic effects on his victims – they feel bonded to him in return (to varying opt-in degrees, of course) and want to be near him and/or submit to him the way a pack member would its leader. He’s easily driven crazy by pheromones and in this form will heavily affect anyone else sensitive to them as well. In his early stages, just placate him with a snack or a scratch or a cuddle. Then run.
